Dining out can be challenging when it comes to finding a place that’s suitable for the whole family. But there are plenty of options for family fun in the Hill Country when eating out at one of the area’s restaurants. Here are some great places to try.
The Longhorn Cafe, New Braunfels and Boerne
With locations in New Braunfels and Boerne, Longhorn Café is a great choice for those with a big appetite. Their famed “Big Juicy” is one big hunk ‘o burger, but but you can also grab a grilled chicken sandwich or a salad if you’re looking for lighter fare. Come on Monday or Tuesday when kids’ meals are only $1.99, and you might just want to hang out a little longer since the little ones will be entertained by the outdoor play area with sandbox.
The Gristmill, Gruene
The Gristmill is one of the favorite attractions in the Hill Country, routinely named to “best of” lists for its huge menu, scenic location, and as much fun as you can muster. There are plenty of choices for kids, and they’ll especially love it (and so will you!) when there’s live music and room for dancing under the oak trees.
Clear River, Fredericksburg
Soups, salads, wraps, sandwiches are on the menu at Clear River, but the real draw here are the baked goods and homemade ice cream, with National Ice Cream Show awards for flavors including Mexican Vanilla, Amaretto Peach and Pecan, Oh Joy and Peanut Butter Knuckle Sandwich.
Blue Bonnet Cafe, Marble Falls
If you’re looking for the best place to spend time with the family in the Hill Country for breakfast, head to Blue Bonnet Café, a tradition for 80 years and a spot that's been heralded by both Texas Highways and Travel & Leisure Magazine. But the real treats are served between 3pm and 5pm during Pie Happy Hour.
Dog and Pony Grill, Boerne
The menu is huge, the live music is, well, lively, and there’s a play area for the kids, a combination basketball court/dance floor, and big screen TVs. Plus, kids’ meals are half price on Mondays.
Rails…a Café at the Depot, Kerrville
The kids will love the setting since the restaurant is located in the fully restored, historic 1915 Kerrville Train depot. Eat indoors out by the fountain, enjoy a well-rounded menu, and then hit the candy store next door for a treat.
Alamo Springs Café, Fredericksburg
Texas Monthly calls their burgers among the best in the state, and you can enjoy them while listening to live music. Have a great big appetite? Take on the burger eating challenge and try to put away six of them in 30 minutes!
Casa Maria, San Marcos
Casa Maria is a favorite spot for traditional Northern Mexican fare, with breakfast and lunch specials and a menu full of tasty fare. Their kids’ menu isn’t huge, but it does offer options for breakfast as well as both Mexican and American options.
