San Marcos is not just the nation’s fastest-growing city, but also one of its most serene. The combination of vibrancy and serenity has homebuyers lining up to live in and around the city. San Marcos was just named to Movoto Real Estate’s list of “The 10 Most Relaxed Small Cities in America.”
“Movoto came up with a list of 140 cities whose population was between 50,000 and 60,000 residents. The real estate company then evaluated the cities on a list of ten criteria – commute time, unemployment rate, cost of living, crime, hours worked per week, population density, percentage of earning spent on rent and the number of massage businesses, yoga studios and parks per capita,” said the Austin American-Statesman. “San Marcos, home of the lazy San Marcos River, came in at No. 10, boasting a 32.8 hour work week and a low 3.40 percent unemployment rate.”
San Marcos was named the fastest-growing city in the nation for the third year in a row, while neighboring New Braunfels was named No. 13. The city’s growth going back to 2010 has increased by 30 percent and is projected to grow another 36.47% in the next 15 years.
Both of these cities benefit from their strategic location along the I35 Corridor between Austin and San Antonio, with an influx of new and expanding businesses and homebuyers helping the area to evolve into “economic hubs in their own rights,” said the San Antonio Express-News. “Census data released in March showed that Hays and Comal counties—which include San Marcos and New Braunfels, respectively—were the fifth- and ninth-fastest-growing counties in the U.S. from July 2013 to July 2014.”
New Braunfels added approximately 2,000 jobs in 2014 and the new $14 million HEB Plus being built on the city’s Northeast side will bring hundreds more next year. The world’s largest retailer, Amazon, recently announced it will open a facility in San Marcos and hire 1,000 employees.
