With school out and the heat of summer upon us, you’re probably looking for ways to keep the kids entertained. There are great Hill Country family activities all year round, but the area really comes to life this season. Here are 13 New Braunfels family fun activities to keep your kids entertained.
If you haven’t yet visited Schlitterbahn, it’s only a matter of time before you learn for yourself why it’s been the No. 1 waterpark in the world for the last 19 years in a row. Of course, so many other people throughout Texas and even further have the same idea, so be sure to check out some tips for navigating Schlitterbahn first.
Gruene is ideal for a date night, but it’s also a great spot to explore with the family during the summer. The little ones will love dancing to live music, the view of the river, and maybe a little taste of local history at the famous Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar, which was once a real cotton mill. Old Gruene Market Days has something for everyone, and no trip to the quaint town is complete without a stop at the Gruene General Store for delicious homemade fudge.
The Comal River
If you haven’t yet experienced the fun of tubing, head for the Comal, which is the calmer of the two rivers in New Braunfels and is also favored by families because it maintains a constant 72-degree temperature all year round.
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
You’ll feel like you’re on a real safari with 500 exotic, native, and endangered animals. Feed them from your car and enjoy the scenery, with 450 acres of Hill Country scenery.
Natural Bridge Caverns
Next door to the Wildlife Ranch, the caverns give you a whole different experience, with miles of natural formations, as well as a Canopy Challenge with Zip Line, and other great family-oriented Hill Country activities.
Texas Ski Ranch
This adventure spot is chock full of fun for kids and families, with wake boarding, paintballing, skateboarding, and snowboarding.
Spring Loaded Trampoline Park
This is also located at Texas Ski Ranch, and is a great place to go to let the kiddos jump off some steam. Bonus: The seating area is the optimal spot to sit and watch or even get some work done if you bring your laptop.
You’ll love Fredericksburg for the wineries and great antique shopping, and your kids will love climbing Enchanted Rock. Check the Marburger Orchards website ahead of time to see what their picking conditions are. This Fredericksburg orchard has peaches, blackberries, and veggies for the pickin’.
Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo
This is a hotspot of New Braunfels family fun activities with another opportunity to see animals—of both the furry and scaly kind —and go mining for gemstones at Two Rivers Mining Co.
McKenna Children’s Museum
Already one of New Braunfels’ favorite family-friendly spots, the museum gets even better over the summer, with several special activities.
A short drive from New Braunfels, Boerne is perfect for a daycation with the kids. The Hauptstrasse or Main Street is chock full of charming shops and art galleries, Cibolo Nature Center’s 100 acres of wilderness, trails, walking paths, and horseback riding, and the National Natural Landmark Cave Without A Name is one of the favorite caves in the Hill Country and is distinguished by its stalactites and stalagmites. The constant 66-degree weather is enough to make us go, but if you’re heading that direction, be sure to check the event calendar first. You don’t want to miss one of the musicals in the cave. “With a combination of dynamic acoustics and nature's natural backdrop (too beautiful for words), both performers and guests declare concerts in the Cave Throne Room as most memorable,” they said.
Head for the highway and you’ll be in San Antonio in no time, where a full day of activities for the family—or more—await. The DoSeum children's museum offers indoor and outdoor STEM-based exhibits, the San Antonio Aquarium is a haven for animal lovers. Be sure to check the schedule for animal feedings and other interactive activities.
The Texas capitol is an easy drive from New Braunfels, and numerous family-friendly activities await, including Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Park, and the sunset bat release at the Congress Avenue Bridge.
The Crossings, the newest master-planned community in New Braunfels, is a 288-acre enclave features two single-family neighborhoods from Lennar with modern floorplans, spacious gathering areas, many of today’s most coveted features, and individual New Braunfels homesites that back up to a private greenbelt and rolling hills. The Crossings also boasts great onsite amenities including a swimming pool, grassy play areas, and walking trails, along with Hill Country views and a location offering easy access to I35.
