Add another accolade to the long list enjoyed by the acclaimed Comal ISD, the school district that serves buyers of Texas Hill Country new homes in New Braunfels’ communities like The Crossings. The American Heart Association and H-E-B have presented the district and ComalFit with the Healthy School District Award.
“Together the American Heart Association and H-E-B congratulated Comal ISD and ComalFit for this achievement and awarded ComalFit $5,000 to spend on their wellness efforts,” said KGNB. “ComalFit is the district’s wellness program which includes both students, faculty and their family members.”
All 18 of Comal ISD’s elementary campuses, three middle schools, and more than 1,100 Comal ISD employees participated in this important effort. “This competition was launched by H-E-B to support the programs that the American Heart Association has for student and staff wellness,” they said. “Campuses participating in student wellness programs at the elementary and secondary levels earned points. Points were also earned by participating in two staff-wellness objectives, the ‘Go Red Challenge,’ which sent periodic messages to all staff regarding managing risk factors for heart disease, including weight, blood sugar, hypertension, cholesterol, smoking, nutrition and exercise; and for participating in ‘Check. Change. Control’ a hypertension management program.”
Comal ISD a top district
Comal ISD is known as one of the top school districts in the area, and is sought out by homebuyers looking to buy Texas Hill Country new homes. Comal ISD was the only public school district out of a total of 1,040 in the San Antonio area to earn five stars in last year’s Texas Smart Schools program, placing “CISD in a small but prestigious group of just 44 total districts to earn that ranking,” said News Radio 1200 WOAI. That equates to being in the top 20% for academic progress and in the bottom 20% for spending.
In addition, all Comal ISD campuses Met Standard again for 2016—“the highest possible standard based on the state’s public school accountability system,” according to the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung. Comal ISD also earned 45 Distinctions in the TEA Accountability Ratings, with 15 Comal ISD campuses earning at least one distinction. To understand the district’s popularity with parents who want the best for their children, consider this: The district enjoyed record enrollment last year, surpassing “the 22,000-student mark for the first time in its near 60-year history.”
